Melatonin: therapeutic and clinical utilization.
نویسندگان
چکیده
Melatonin, acting through melatonin receptors, is involved in numerous physiological processes including circadian entrainment, blood pressure regulation, oncogenesis, retinal physiology, seasonal reproduction, ovarian physiology, immune function and most recently in inducing osteoblast differentiation. Moreover, melatonin was proved to be a potent-free radical scavenger and a broad-spectrum antioxidant. More research is required into the effects of therapeutically modulating the melatoninergic system on circadian haemodynamics and rhythm under varying physiopathological conditions and the possible impact on morbidity and mortality in humans.

Comparison of the Therapeutic Effects of Melatonin, Metformin and Vitamin E on Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease: A Randomized Clinical Trial
Background and Objective: Currently, no therapeutic or surgical treatment for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has been officially approved. This is a serious void in the medical field given the increasing prevalence of NAFLD cases in developing countries. Our study compared the therapeutic effect of metformin, melatonin and vitamin E on serum parameters that are associated with NAFLD ...
متن کاملP 60: The Effect of Melatonin as a Therapeutic Goal on Multiple Sclerosis Through Immune Processes
Multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune disease of the central nervous system which is accompanied by demyelinating the neurons. The imbalance between the T cell effectors and T cell regulators is thought to have a role in the pathogenesis of the disease. Melatonin is a hormone that is secreted by pineal gland which has an important role in circadian rhythm and immune-modulatory effects. Melatonin ...
متن کاملMelatonin: A therapeutic potential for the neurohormone in gallbladder disorders
In humans, N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine (melatonin), a neurohormone widely found in plants and animal sources, is synthesized from serotonin primarily by the pineal gland. However, it it is also produced in a number of other areas, e.g. the gastrointestinal tract. Melatonin regulates various biological and physiologic body functions and its role in the regulation of circadian rhythms, particula...

متن کاملPotential Role of Exogenous Melatonin Supplement in Delirium Prevention in Critically Ill Patients: A Double-Blind Randomized Pilot Study
Critically ill patients often suffer from disturbance of sleep-wake cycle and consequently delirium development, in intensive care units (ICU). In this study, we aimed to evaluate the effect of exogenous melatonin on delirium development and its related adverse sequelae in the subgroup of medical and surgical ICU patients. We performed a double-blind placebo-controlled randomized pilot study i...
